Critically acclaimed alternative rock figures with an uninterrupted 30+year career unparalleled in its creative breadth
Yo La Tengo
The husband-wife duo of Hoboken natives Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley got together in 1984 with guitarist Dave Schramm and bassist Dave Rick and formed what has been branded as the “quintessential critics’ band,” with their skilled, mellow musicianship, clever phrasing and crafty lyrics. This infectious experimental indie rock troupe, affectionately called YLT by fans, has often been a trio, but currently consists of four full-time members (three of the originals). With fourteen albums to their name, they are not only known for their original songs (some of which receive the classification of “noise pop”), but for their mastery of covering other artists’ tracks in a wild medley of genres. In 1986 they unleashed their debut Ride the Tiger, which promptly received praise, setting up YLT for substantially bigger things to come. As the years passed, this musically marauding group of skilled folk underwent numerous changes in members, but always stayed true to their sincerely grounded sound, even as it developed and morphed. All the way up to 2016’s Murder in the Second Degree, an assortment of their live impromptu cover tracks, YLT has continued to impress. With numerous cinematic ties, they’ve composed the scores to Adventureland and the films of Jean Painleve, and even portrayed the legendary group The Velvet Underground in I Shot Andy Warhol.
