The Heights Players is thrilled to announce the auditions for their upcoming September production of Cabaret. Book by Joe Masteroff, Music by John Kander and Lyrics by Fred Ebb. Musical Direction by Leslie Wickham and Directed and Choreographed by Michael Kidney.
Set in 1931 Berlin as the Nazis are rising to power, it is based in nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub, and revolves around young American writer Cliff Bradshaw and his relationship with English cabaret performer Sally Bowles. A sub-plot involves the doomed romance between German boarding house owner Fräulein Schneider and her elderly suitor Herr Schultz, a Jewish fruit vendor. Overseeing the action is the Master of Ceremonies at the Kit Kat Klub.

Emcee ‐ Master of Ceremonies at the Kit Kat Klub. Open to both men and women. The host at the Kit Kat Klub – presented as a gender-questionable character comfortable with being close to both men and women – comedic – loveable. Jazz and Tap required. Age range and appearance flexible. Speaks with a German Accent.
Sally Bowles — A British Cabaret singer at the Kit Kat Klub. Alto with Strong Belt. A quirky character that comes across as flighty – yet at times struggles with knowing the darkness of the reality of her life as a cabaret performer. Jazz and tap required. Age range — 20s to 30s. Speaks with a British Accent.
Cliff Bradshaw — An American novelist and English teacher traveling to Berlin. Baritone. Presented as clearly bisexual or gay. Age range — 20s to Mid 30s. Speaks with an American accent.
Fraulein Schneider — A landlady who rents rooms in her large flat. Alto. Comfortable with stage movement and light dance – waltz. Age range — 40+. Speaks with a German accent.
Herr Schultz — One of Fraulein Schneider’s roomers and the proprietor of a Fruit Shop. Baritone. Comfortable with stage movement and light dance — waltz. Age Range — 40+. Speaks with a German accent.
**The following roles are encouraged (but not required) to play instruments. If you play an instrument, please bring it to the initial audition.
Fraulein Kost – Another of Fraulein Schneider’s roomers. Mezzo/Soprano with belt. She earns money by offering favours to sailors – presentation of the character should exhibit a strong sexual comfort and commanding nature. May double as Fritzi so dance may be required. Age Range — 20s to early 30s. Speaks with a German accent.
Ernst Ludwig – A friendly and Likeable German. Sings in the Chorus or plays in band. Takes English lessons from Cliff and smuggles funds for the Nazi Party. Comfortable with stage movement and light dance. Age Range — flexible. Speaks with a German accent.
Kit Kat Girls — Kit Kat Klub Performers. Strong Singers in all voice parts. The ladies can be of various sizes and backgrounds – the key is to be comfortable with your femininity and in skimpy attire that shows off your body and sexuality. Must be proficient in jazz and tap. Age Range — 20s to early 30s.
Kit Kat Boys — Kit Kat Klub Performers. Strong Singers in all voice parts. Must be comfortable with portraying sexual fluidity. Must be proficient in jazz and tap. Age Range — 20s to early 30s.
OPEN CALL auditions will take place on Monday July 17th & Tuesday July 18th, 2017 at 7 p.m. at the Heights Players, 26 Willow Place, Brooklyn NY 11201. We ask that you arrive early to sign in. The audition will start with a dance call. All those auditioning for the Emcee, Sally Bowles or as Kit Kat Girl or Boy, please bring jazz and tap shoes. Those auditioning for any other part do not have to attend the dance call and can arrive later. Sign up will end by 9 p.m. Everyone must prepare a 32 bar cut of a song in the same style of the show or a standard. Please do not choose a song from the show. Callbacks will be on Wednesday July 19th, 2017 by invitation only.
Rehearsals will take place in the evenings at the Heights Players. Performance dates Friday thru Sunday, September 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 22, 23, & 24…
