An Act of Resistance
a solo exhibition of new works by artist
Morell Cutler
at Apostrophe NYC Gallery

An Act of Resistance, Morell Cutler’s first solo exhibition in 4 years will debut at Apostrophe NYC Gallery on August 19th 2017.
Cutler’s new body of work explores the intersectionality of the body as an orifice; a body that is both influenced by, and influences space. He often uses the memory or observation of an object to connect to abstract spaces or dreamscapes. Cutler’s work finds its balance as a collage of both memory and dream; observation and/of nightmare. In this comparison he aims to share a critique of our modern society, as well as his own philosophy on socio-politics, and understanding of the natural world. By way of this vast intersection Morell Cutler’s work finds itself adding to conversations of race, gender, sexuality and class through his dissection of his past and present, while defining a future; an expression of hope.

Morell Cutler

Morell Cutler was born in New York City in 1991. He has a BFA from California College of Art. He currently lives and works in New York City.

Cutler employs a vivid color palette to compose internal-landscapes/symbolic still lives, exploring the cultural and personal significance of identity. Cutler references the body symbolically and sensually through weighted psychic-objects often tropical fruit and flora.

Apostrophe NYC

Founded in 2012 by brothers Sei and Ki Smith, Apostrophe NYC began as a renegade art gallery and underground music venue in Bushwick, Brooklyn. After a year of hosting and stimulating New York City’s emerging artists, musicians, and culture rats, Apostrophe NYC was forcibly shuttered by New York’s Finest. Without an address, Apostrophe NYC continues to throw pop-up events and art shows that push the boundaries of expected experiences. Currently, Apostrophe NYC and their Base 12 artists have a 9,000 sq.ft. gallery and studio space through a year long residency program at Mana Contemporary.

Since 2016 Apostrophe NYC's main focus has been their Base 12 project, a 2-year global art project featuring 12 emerging artists through a series of site specific pop-ups and exhibitions. The goal is to showcase these 12 artists while simultaneously exploring the effect of site and context on the art experience.
