By Arthur Miller
Directed By Nick Sala

Set in the 1950’s on the gritty Brooklyn waterfront, A View From the Bridge follows the cataclysmic downfall of Eddie Carbone, who spends his days as a hardworking longshoreman and his nights at home with his wife, Beatrice, and orphan niece, Catherine. But the routine of his life is interrupted when Beatrice's cousins, illegal immigrants from Italy, arrive in New York. As one of them embarks on a romance with Catherine, Eddie's envy and delusion plays out with devastating consequences. Sexual repression, jealousy, paranoia and homophobia drive Eddie to an act of betrayal that has tragic consequences for himself, his family and the whole community.

Eddie Carbone: (mid 30’s – early 40’s) The hardworking, blue-collar lead of the play. Eddie is an Italian-American longshoreman (dockyard worker) who provides food on the table for his family, a roof over their heads, and an education for his adopted niece. He is proud, stubborn, passionate, impulsive, powerful, masculine and virile, but feeling for the first time his own oncoming age and the looming specter of his diminishing power. He has a temper but can also seduce you.

Beatrice Carbone: (mid 30’s – early 40’s) Eddie’s wife. Big-hearted and generous, she cares deeply for those around her. Loyal, perceptive and loving she is very concerned by her husband’s growing physical and emotional distance from her. Though her emotions may run as deeply as everyone else’s, she doesn’t have the luxury of letting them show and attempts to exercise her power in other, more subtle ways. She sees her relationship with her husband and her family deteriorating before her eyes. She is anxious to repair the situation any way she can.

Catherine: (late teens) Eddie and Beatrice’s niece, living with them. She is an alluring, charming and bright spirit. Eddie’s pampering of her has kept her in a state of arrested development, but she has begun to come into her own--and is constantly testing the boundaries between being a girl and a woman. She’s excited by and fearful of the outside world; anxious to grow up and make her own life, but frightened of invoking Eddie’s anger. She develops an attraction to her cousin, Rodolpho, which is the complication that sets in action the story of the play.

Rodolpho: (early 20’s – mid 20’s) Beatrice's newly arrived illegal immigrant cousin from Italy here for work. He’s blonde, good looking and charming. He immediately falls for Catherine. His youth and charisma are a threat to Eddie. Rodolpho sings “Paper Moon” and appears without a shirt. Italian accent.

Marco: (early 30’s – mid 30’s) Rodolpho’s older brother who also just arrived illegally. He’s a man of few words. Like Rodolpho, he came to America to work. Marco is here to send money back home to his family. He’s very strong and in good physical condition. Respectful, cautious, hard worker. Keeps his head down, but responds with strength when threatened. Watches out for his younger brother. Actor must perform a physical skill that requires upper body strength. Italian accent.

Alfieri: (late 40’s – mid 50’s) The narrator of the play and a family friend of the Carbone’s. Alfieri is the wise attorney who dispenses legal advice to Eddie. Essentially, Alfieri is the proxy, the representative of the Red Hook neighborhood, completely familiar with its turf and its inhabitants. He tries to guide. His function in the play can be compared to a Greek Chorus. He is wise and has seen everything.

Other roles that are smaller but important to the show are:

Immigration Officer 1 & 2 – Male (40’s)
Louis & Mike — Eddie’s Co-workers (40’s)
Mr. & Mrs. Lipari – Eddie’s Neighbors (50’s)
These roles may be doubled.

Notes from the Director:
This is a very physical show. Actors must be comfortable on stage in intimate and violent situations. We will use accents.
