Visual Artists: CALL FOR ENTRIES

EXHIBITION: Unreliable Narrator
ENTRIES DUE: September 7, 2017
EXHIBITION DATES: October 13 to December 8, 2017

VENUE:
Art House Gallery, 300 Coles Street, Jersey City, NJ 07310

THEME:
In any narrative, the audience tends to trust that the narrator is telling the truth. However, there are many instances in creative endeavors and in historical accounts, where it becomes clear that the narrator’s story is no longer reliable, and as such becomes suspect. As much as any medium, visual art can be subject to the distorted vision of the creator. A visual artist is not necessarily a documentarian, and has great license to modify reality to their vision. Today, when we look at Hieronymus Bosch, we don’t take his visions of Hell and the trials of Earth literally. However, when he painted them his viewers did indeed believe Bosch, and that his horrible depictions were the results of the wages of sin. So, the idea of “unreliable” can change over time. We don’t experience Georgio de Chirico’s work as literal, but there is a mood of truth, a mystery we dread. Neo Rauch, gives us a vision of communist social realism, but interspersed throughout the larger image are smaller vignettes that undermine the truth of the narrative. Kara Walker with her seemingly whimsical silhouettes, undermines the accepted truth of American history to tell a more difficult and larger truth. The notion that “history is recorded by the victors” gives us pause. What are the alternative points of view; what are those missing histories and who tells those stories?

Art House Gallery, is looking for work that speaks to the theme of the Unreliable Narrator and the slippery question of what is truth. We are interested in alternative histories, missing and underrepresented histories, and changeable truths. A broad approach to the theme is encouraged. All media are welcome. A catalogue will accompany the exhibition. The exhibition will be part of the Jersey City Artist and Studio Tour.

CURATION:
The exhibition is curated from the open call. This approach is distinct from a juried exhibition. Art House Gallery calls are an opportunity to look beyond established networks to bring together a diverse group of artists. The curation team is rigorous in the service of the artists, the exhibition and audience. In addition to the quality of the work, balance, space and other factors influence final selections. This means some excellent and appropriate work may not ultimately be included. We hope all the artists submitting work understand this and continue to respond to future calls.
