Tuesday, August 15 is the Feast and Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Church Universal on this day celebrates that, by the power of God Almighty, Our Lady was assumed, that is taken up both body and soul into Heaven at the completion of her earthly life.
At the Pontifical Shrine and Parish Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Manhattan, we will celebrate Masses at 7 AM and 9 AM in English, and the Solemn Mass at 7:30 PM in Latin, with Homily in English. All are welcome!
This day is a Holy Day of Obligation, meaning you must attend Holy Mass Tuesday, or Monday night if you cannot attend on Tuesday at the nearest Catholic Church wherever you may be.
At each Mass we will have the blessing of flowers after Mass. You are encouraged to bring flowers to Mass on this day to receive this special blessing commemorating the Assumption. Tradition has it that when the Apostles visited the tomb of Mary, her body was assumed already into heaven, fragrant and beautiful flowers remained as a reminder of the purity and beauty of the Mother of God. These blest flowers are powerful sacramentals for use in the home.
