Based on Sholom Aleichem’s Tevye and his Daughters, Fiddler on the Roof is the beloved story of the small, tradition-steeped town of Anatevka, Russia, where Jews and Russians live in delicate balance. During the course of the show, the time honored traditions of Anatevka are both embraced and challenged by Tevye and his colorful community, as they witness his daughters, Tzeitel, Hodel and Chava, grow up and fall in love in a time of extraordinary change. It is a story that captures the essential human longings for love, community, success, freedom, family, and meaning.
Tevye is the heart and conscience of Fiddler on the Roof. Tevye should be able to show the wide range of conflict, joy and pain that this character feels throughout the story. The actor needs to be comfortable speaking directly to the audience.
Play between 40-55 Years Old
Golde is the backbone of the family. She has a rather gruff exterior, but in her heart is sheer dedication to her family. She runs the household, and must be able to keep Tevye 's more emotional side in check.
Play between 40-50 Years Old
Tzeitel is the oldest daughter of Tevye and Golde. She is the first to challenge the traditions of Anatevka by pleading with her father to let her marry Motel the tailor, to whom she has pledged her love.
Play 19 Years Old
Hodel is a strong, independent child. She is outspoken but respectful. She has her eye on the Rabbi 's son at the outset of the story, but she is charmed by the revolutionary Perchick the moment she meets him, though she may not show it right away. Her dedication and love is real as she follows him to Siberia.
Play 17 Years Old
Chava is the scholarly daughter who loves to read. Her love for the Russian, Fyedka, tests her father to the very limit and provides the largest conflict in the story.
Play 16 Years Old
Shprintze and Bielke
Shprintze and Bielke are the youngest daughters of Tevye and Golde. They are considerably younger than the other three daughters.
Play 9-13 Years Old
Looking specifically for a child who plays violin.
A very important part to this story. The Fiddler appears with Tevye and throughout the show symbolizing the change in tradition.
10-13 Years Old
Perchik is a young student who brings with him radical new ideas that challenge the traditions of the community. He is a strong character, and clashes with Tevye idealistically, but is likable, charming and ultimately becomes a loyal family member.
Play 19-25 Years Old
Fyedka is a strong, young, Russian soldier who falls in love with Chava.
Play 16-18 Years Old
Lazar Wolf is a butcher, the towns wealthiest citizen Lazar must appear rather distasteful and feisty, which is why Tzeitel is frightened to marry him.
Play 50-65 Years Old
Yente is the middle-aged widow who matches up the young people of the village in hopes that they will marry. She is a village busybody and knows all the news of the town. Great comedic timing.
Play 35-45 Years Old
The constable is the local sheriff representing the Russian government. The constable is a complex character, caught between his good nature towards the people of Anatevka and his duty to the non-Jewish Russian government. This is a non-singing role that requires a strong actor.
Play 40-60 Years Old
There are a lot of featured parts to be given out during casting as well as the ensemble villagers and soldiers.
