Belladonna* Collaborative and Makhzin co-present an evening of readings featuring Zohra Saed and Mina Zohal, followed by a conversation between the two writers, moderated by Youmna Chlala.

ZOHRA SAED is the coeditor of One Story, Thirty Stories: An Anthology of Contemporary Afghan American Literature(University of Arkansas Press, 2010) and editor of the chapbook Langston Hughes: Poems, Photos and Notebook from Turkestan (Lost & Found, The CUNY Poetics Documents Initiative). Her essays on the Central Asian diaspora and its food history have appeared in Eating Asian America (New York University Press) and the Asian American Literary Review. Her poetry has been published in numerous anthologies and journals. She co-founded UpSet Press, a Brooklyn-based nonprofit indie press with poet Robert Booras. Saed is assistant professor at Bard Early College.

MINA ZOHAL is an Afghan American writer. She holds a BA from Naropa University and an MFA from the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts, Bard College. Recent works can be found in Apogee, Makhzin, and Brooklyn Rail.

YOUMNA CHLALA is an artist and a writer whose work investigates the relationship between fate and architecture through drawing, video, sculpture, prose and performance. She participated in the 2011 Performa Biennial and has exhibited widely including the ICA London, Rotterdam International Film Festival, The Drawing Center, Dubai Art Projects, Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, Camera Austria, CultuurCentrum Bruges and Art In General. Her book of poetry The Paper Camera is forthcoming by Litmus Press. She is the Founding Editor of Eleven Eleven {1111} Journal of Literature and Art and recipient of a Joseph Henry Jackson Award. Her writing appears in Urban Hopes- Made in China and in publications such as Guernica, Bespoke, CURA, Prairie Shooner, MIT Journal for Middle Eastern Studies and XCP: Journal of Cross Cultural Poetics. In 2010, she co-founded the Institute of Mutating Cities. Chlala is the recipient of several residencies including the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Headlands Center for the Arts, Hedgebrook and CAMAC: Center for Art and Technology. She is an Associate Professor in the Humanities & Media Studies Department at the Pratt Institute, on the core faculty of the MFA in Writing program, a founding member of Poetics Lab and co-coordinator of the Architecture Writing program.

Launched in 2014 as part of 98weeks Research Project’s ‘On Publications’, Makhzin is a yearly, bi-lingual English and Arabic magazine for fiction, prose, poetry, essays, and occasional translations. In addition, we publish long-form interviews between writers, artists, and thinkers every month. Our yearly issues are also available in print.
