As if there weren’t already enough reasons to hate the cable company…
Workers at Time Warner Cable have been without a contract since 2013, and now that Time Warner has been purchased by Charter/Spectrum, the company’s new owners are demanding appalling concessions. Like so many employers in this union-busting age, Spectrum wants to do away with pensions. They also want to eliminate payments to the workers’ union-controlled health care program and to their Education and Cultural Fund, and they want to take control of the certification program through which workers can gain promotions based on increased skills. Make no mistake, this is a major attack.
In response, about 1800 New York and New Jersey-based members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 3 have been on strike since the end of March. Spectrum has fought back by employing scabs to keep things running normally, placing more and more pressure on the strikers with each week that passes. Many are facing severe economic hardship, including the threat of eviction.
Spectrum workers and their families are not just holding out--they're fighting to win, organizing rotating picket lines with more than 150 people each and an emergency fund to support their comrades (see link below). But the situation remains precarious. Spectrum shows no sign of budging and the financial pressures on the strikers grow ever greater. If they are to have any hope of winning a decent contract from their new bosses, they are going to need help on every front.
Join us to discuss the current state of the strike, why it is so important not just to the strikers but to all workers, and how you can help. Speaking at the meeting will be B. Moon, a member of the United Federation of Teachers, parent activist, spouse of an IBEW striker, and organizer of the Spectrum Striking Families in Need fund (again, see link below); and ISO member Amy Muldoon, a Verizon worker who last year was on strike and labor activist and Suhan Lee, Spectrum worker on strike.
