The first Mediterranean Jazz Fest NYC at Planeta happened last year with stellar performances and an enthusiastic crowd. On January 11th 2018, the second edition will take place with a promising line up featuring the Maria Manousaki Quartet, Mintus-Arnold Duo and the Petros Klampanis Group ft. Arooj Aftab. What unites all these artists is that their highly original music is inspired by traditional and contemporary music from around the Mediterranean, with influences spanning from the Middle East, Greece and Turkey all the way to Mare Nostrum's most Western border of Morocco and Andalusia.
The Mediterranean has been the cultural and musical melting pot of ancient times, much like New York has been in modern times, the latter therefore being the perfect city to host a festival that strives to celebrate musical innovation and tradition, cultural cross-pollination and diversity. These may be fashionable buzzwords that we associate with 21 century globalization but they really describe ideas that have existed in the Mediterranean for millennia.
