To celebrate our 10th Anniversary of creating and producing brand-new chamber operas, Rhymes With Opera chose one of the oldest fairy tales in western culture for our Spring Mainstage. The story of Rumpelstiltskin, collected by the Brothers Grimm, dates as far back as the Bronze Age. In our Rumpelstiltskin, insatiable greed, bargaining, magic, unconditional love of a child, and a sense of home were themes that we spun into music in this modern take on a very old story.
The title character is a fantastical creature who grapples between the two sides of their personality, and is reflected in the creative process of the opera — a collaborative work with music by RWO co-artistic directors Ruby Fulton and George Lam, and an original libretto by John Clum.
What is it about Rumpelstiltskin that made it last for over 4,000 years? And why are we turning it into an opera? Come see Rhymes With Opera's world premiere and become part of the magic in this modern fairytale.
